We’re also here to offer basic HVAC maintenance and upkeep services, many of which revolve around the furnace this time of year. Here are some of the potential minor issues that may crop up with your furnace in a given winter, plus some basic DIY steps to prevent them and keep your system running optimally.

Thermostat Concerns

One of the first places to check if you’ve noticed improper heating or other issues with the furnace is the thermostat. Especially if your home’s thermostat and electrical connections are on the older side, it’s possible there are issues with what the thermostat is communicating to the furnace.

The first area to check here: Batteries, which should be changed every so often. If this isn’t the problem, check that the thermostat is turned on and has the proper heat settings. If none of this solves the issue, you may need to call our pros to look into wiring or other connectivity issues – or you may want to consider upgrading to a smart thermostat.

Filter Check

From here, another common culprit of furnace issues is the HVAC filter, which needs to be changed or cleaned at regular intervals throughout the year. Failure to do so will clog it up, making the furnace work harder to pump out the same level of warm air into your home. Poorly cleaned filters will also impact your air quality, so you should not overlook this area.

Not Turning On

Have you noticed the furnace simply isn’t turning on at all? This may be due to a simple issue of your circuit breaker being tripped – go check it and reset the circuit for the furnace if it’s been tripped. If this is not the issue, and the furnace won’t turn on despite no issue with the circuit, it’s time to call in our pros.

Vent Cleaning

Finally, ensure all the vents in your home are properly cleaned and clear of any debris or blockages, including furniture in the room. Any such blockages or issues can limit air flow, impacting your furnace and air quality alike. While you’re at it, check your outdoor exhaust vent to ensure the furnace and HVAC system are properly ventilating.
